They often reward one type of communication, one type of focus, and one type of behaviour. Expectations are frequently left unspoken, yet people are still judged against them. In these settings, the problem is not only individual difficulty. The problem is also structural design.

Used carefully, AI can help reduce some of this friction. It can make dense information easier to follow. It can help break tasks into smaller steps. It can support drafting when starting feels difficult. It can offer different ways to engage with information, including text, audio, and summaries. It can also provide space to rehearse communication or plan responses.

These forms of support can be useful. But they should not be understood as tools for making neurodivergent people appear more typical. That is an important line. The goal should not be normalisation. The goal should be accessibility, autonomy, and agency.

There is also a wider risk. AI systems are trained on data that often reflect dominant social norms. This means they may reproduce assumptions about what good communication looks like, what professionalism sounds like, or what kind of behaviour is treated as appropriate. When those assumptions go unchallenged, technology can quietly reinforce neurotypical norms as the default.

This is why the conversation cannot stop at support. It must also include design, governance, and power.

Neurodivergent people do not only need better tools. They also bring valuable ways of thinking that can improve technology itself. These may include different forms of pattern recognition, non-linear problem solving, deep focus, sensitivity to inconsistency, and alternative ways of interpreting information. These are not deficits. They are sources of insight.

When neurodivergent people are involved in designing, testing, auditing, and governing AI systems, the result can be stronger and more adaptable technology. Inclusion then moves beyond accommodation. It becomes part of the structure of the system.

For institutions, this raises serious questions. Are AI tools being used to support people, or to avoid making deeper changes? Who is included in design and decision-making, and who is missing? Do systems reward only one cognitive style? Are neurodivergent people invited only to test systems, or also to shape them?

These are not small usability questions. They are questions of governance, ethics, and institutional responsibility.
